Brenta BioBlitz – In Search of Biodiversity!

Do you live near the Brenta River and are curious to discover the species that inhabit it? The Brenta BioBlitz is on its way: the global citizen science event dedicated to the rivers of your region.

We await you on Saturday, September 23, 2023, from 10 AM to 12 PM in Carmignano di Brenta, near Lake Camazzole.

A morning open to everyone, dedicated to observing and photographically mapping the river’s biodiversity, in the company of experts from Etifor | Valuing Nature, and the animators from Jonathan Cooperativa Sociale, with the scientific contribution of the TESAF Department of the University of Padua.

How to Participate

Participation is simple: all you need is a mobile phone with a camera and a healthy dose of curiosity. Find and identify as many plants, flowers, and animals as possible by taking photos and uploading them to the iNaturalist app. The collected photos will become valuable data to enrich the Brenta River’s biodiversity inventory within the Brenta BioBlitz: alla scoperta della biodiversità project. Everyone can participate in the BioBlitz! Children, young people, seniors, university students, families, associations, and anyone passionate about nature or photography!

The Area of Interest

Lake Camazzole, also known as “Busa de Giaretta,” is a blue body of water located in the municipality of Carmignano di Brenta, within the natural area of the middle course of the Brenta River. It is recognized by the European Community as a protected area and part of the Natura 2000 Network. The Middle Brenta River flows through a particularly human-altered territory, making the environments and habitats found there even more crucial as a refuge for numerous animal and plant species. In fact, almost half of the species in the entire national avifauna have been observed in this site. The flora of the Middle Brenta, with over 800 recorded taxa, while being one-fifth composed of exotic species, still hosts numerous species of naturalistic value.

BioBlitz Around the World

From September 22nd to September 24th, 2023, the fourth edition of the Home River BioBlitz will take place worldwide. This global event is promoted by the River Collective network and, every year, for a single weekend, it brings citizens from all around the world to explore their local rivers and the living beings that inhabit them.

A BioBlitz aims to find and identify as many animal and plant species as possible in a specific area and for a short period of time, typically a day. It is a citizen science initiative where individuals can directly contribute to monitoring biodiversity in their own regions, alongside experts. More information: https://www.homeriverbioblitz.org/
